THOR Industries is entering into an agreement with spacecraft manufacturer SpaceX’s Starlink to provide internet to select recreational vehicles.

THOR-manufactured Airstream, Entegra Coach, Jayco and Tiffin RVs will have the option of a factory-installed Starlink, which provides low-latency, high-speed internet connection while the vehicle is in motion, according to a THOR release. Starlink access will cost $135 per month after a free month of service upon activation.

Elkhart, Ind.-based THOR is the first RV manufacturer to work directly with Starlink for integration into motorized RVs, according to the release. Starlink began offering its standard, portable hardware and service two years ago before introducing the in-motion Starlinks last fall.

Integrated Wi-Fi ‘extremely important’

As motorhome values fluctuate, internet connectivity is proving to be a critical decision-maker for RV customers, with 74% indicating that integrated high-speed internet and Wi-Fi networks are “extremely” or “very important” for future RV purchases, according to a study by THOR.

“This agreement is a big step toward providing constant internet connection for RV [owners] everywhere,” Bob Martin, president and chief executive at THOR Industries, said in the release. “Whether for work, staying in touch with family and friends, or streaming entertainment, a reliable internet connection is a must-have for today’s RV [driver].”

THOR Industries is looking to add Starlink to more RV models manufactured by their subsidiaries, according to the release. The company owns 17 U.S.-based RV manufacturers and held a 48.6% combined North American market share as of Sep. 30, 2022, according to Statistical Surveys.

The Federal Communications Commission in December 2022 approved the expansion of Starlink’s internet network with the launch of up to 7,500 next-generation satellites by SpaceX, according to our sister publication Connectivity Business News.
