General Motors is using vehicle data in its new OnStar Fleet Intelligence platform to help commercial fleet customers determine when to replace vehicles, though financing and lease offerings from GM Financial are not integrated into the system.
GM Fleet account executives can then help customers with replacement and expansion decisions, Rich Martinek, associate director of OnStar Services product marketing, told Equipment Finance News.
Customers can also track vehicle orders from request through delivery, providing visibility into incoming assets as they plan replacement and fleet expansion, he said.
GM expands OnStar Fleet Intelligence rollout
GM launched OnStar Fleet Intelligence Sept. 30 and is rolling out the platform in phases, according to a company announcement.
Additionally, existing OnStar fleet customers will migrate to the platform over the next several months, while new customers will have immediate access to it, Martinek said.
“As we are just beginning to onboard customers, it’s too early to report out any data around changes to operating cost, downtime or vehicle utilization,” Martinek said.
GM expects Fleet Intelligence to help operators identify risky driving behavior and analyze fuel use, idle time, routing and vehicle utilization, he said. Live GPS, geofencing, trip history and fleet insights are among the tools GM said are available to customers.
Fleet Intelligence includes features available through OnStar Fleet Basics, GM’s standard fleet offering, including order tracking, vehicle and driver information, diagnostics, select remote commands and connected-vehicle data for electric and internal combustion engine vehicles, according to the automaker. GM also offers 90-day trials of additional plans, including OnStar Telematics.
Fleet AI Assistant uses GM-approved data
The platform’s OnStar Fleet AI Assistant allows users to query fleet data using natural language, a GM spokesperson told EFN.
AI Assistant uses GM fleet data, and GM evaluates representative responses against internal quality standards, the spokesperson said. GM also reviews responses flagged by customers and internal teams.
Fleet account administrators determine which fleets, vehicles and driver information individual users can access, according to the spokesperson.
Data shared with service providers is handled in accordance with applicable privacy statements, contractual requirements and GM privacy and security requirements, according to the spokesperson.
OnStar Fleet Intelligence can also incorporate non-GM vehicles, Martinek said. Vehicles without built-in OnStar can provide diagnostics, driving-behavior data, location and boundary alerts, and fleet insights when equipped with an adapter and paired with an OnStar One Fleet or OnStar Telematics subscription, he said.
“The platform can help fleet managers spot trends — such as vehicle efficiency — that can help guide the decision on when it may be time to replace a vehicle,” Martinek said.
