Thomas Built Buses, a leading North American school bus manufacturer, has launched the second-generation Saf-T-Liner C2 Jouley, its flagship battery-electric school bus initially introduced in 2017.
Over 1,000 Jouley buses have already been delivered across North America by the subsidiary of Daimler Truck North America., according to a Jan. 9 release by Daimler Truck. The updated model features the Accelera 14Xe eAxle from Cummins Inc., which integrates key components like the motor, transmission and brakes into a single unit mounted on the rear axle.
This design eliminates the need for a traditional driveshaft, reducing weight, complexity and maintenance costs while improving efficiency and ride quality, according to the Jan. 9 release. Coupled with the Accelera ELFA inverter, it enhances acceleration and torque for smoother performance.
Key upgrades include a 219-inch wheelbase, accommodating up to 60 passengers and improving maneuverability for tight spaces and service bays, according to the Jan. 9 release. The bus is powered by an 800-volt Proterra battery system (246 kWh capacity, 220 kW/295 hp output), enhancing startability, gradeability and acceleration, despite the battery manufacturer’s bankruptcy last year. Production of the new Jouley has begun, with additional wheelbase options planned for 2025.
Daimler’s electric vehicle portfolio consists of 11 models, including Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Thomas Built Buses and FUSO light-duty trucks, and RIZON medium-duty trucks, according to the company’s website.
