Amazon has announced its largest-ever order of electric heavy-duty vehicles as it works to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
The e-commerce giant ordered more than 200 Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 trucks that will join its European transportation network later this year, the company announced in a release today. The eActros trucks will operate across Amazon’s middle-mile network in the United Kingdom and Germany, transporting more than 350 million packages annually once fully deployed.
To support the adoption of these vehicles, Amazon is installing 360-kilowatt electric charging points at key sites, capable of charging the 40-tonne trucks from 20% to 80% in just over an hour. In addition, the company plans to collaborate with stakeholders to expand external charging infrastructure, addressing one of the key challenges in scaling electric heavy-vehicle operations.
The company is also advancing sustainable logistics through other initiatives, including electric rail transport in the U.K., on-foot deliveries in London and an expanded fleet of electric delivery vans and cargo bikes across Europe. In Germany, Amazon doubled its fleet of Rivian electric delivery vans to over 600, while e-cargo bikes delivered more than 1.5 million packages in Berlin alone last year, according to the release. By the end of 2024, Amazon’s micromobility hubs will operate in Germany’s largest cities and additional European locations.
Amazon’s broader decarbonization efforts include an investment of 1 billion euros ($1.03 billion) to electrify its European transportation network. The company has deployed 50 electric heavy-duty trucks in California and expects its fleet of 3,000 electric delivery vans in Europe to grow to over 10,000 by the end of 2025.
