Truck maker PACCAR Inc., parent company of the Kenworth and Peterbilt nameplates, will lay off 175 employees in its Sainte-Therese, Que.-plant over weakening demand, according to a news release sent by a local union of Unifor.

  • “These layoffs will take effect starting August 4 and are in addition to the 250 others announced last December,” Unifor said. “In an uncertain economic climate, exacerbated in part by US tariffs, the company has seen its production decline.”
  • The plant currently employs between 900 and 1,000 workers, according to union information
  • Unifor called for Canadian governments to put in place measures to support the purchase of Canada-made trucks
  • The Sainte-Therese plant manufactures light- and medium-duty trucks, and exports the vast majority of its production to the US, according to the company’s website
  • The head of the Quebec plant, Steve Anctil, told the Montreal-based media La Presse that production has fallen by about 50% over the past year
  • PACCAR declined to comment
