Yanmar launches electrification unit to advance zero-emission machinery

Equipment manufacturer Yanmar is establishing a new electrification unit to drive innovation in the compact off-highway machinery sector, focusing on electric powertrain solutions.

Beginning operations in April 2025, the unit will develop and integrate e-powertrain technologies, including batteries and eDrives, for excavators, wheel loaders, and other industrial machinery, according to a March 10 Yanmar release. The initiative aligns with Yanmar’s Green Challenge 2050 sustainability goals, reinforcing the company’s commitment to zero-emission solutions.

The unit will operate globally, leveraging Yanmar’s technical expertise, service network, and strategic acquisitions, such as the 2022 purchase of Eleo Technologies, to strengthen its battery capabilities. Marko Dekena, an expert in electric and alternative energy powertrains, will lead the Electrification Unit, guiding Yanmar’s transition toward sustainable industrial solutions.

The unit will function with strategic autonomy to enhance innovation in electric machinery, e-powertrains, and battery systems while integrating existing e-powertrain initiatives, according to the release. In addition to electrification, Yanmar continues to explore hydrogen and alternative fuels to further reduce carbon emissions. With this initiative, Yanmar positions itself as a leader in the sustainable transformation of the off-highway machinery sector.
