Engine manufacturer and power systems provider Cummins and OEM Komatsu have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop hybrid powertrains for heavy-mining haul trucks.
The collaboration also includes drive system supplier Wabtec, which will contribute to advanced powertrain solutions for the next generation of mining equipment, according to a Cummins release today. The partnership builds on Cummins’ long history of diesel engine supply and Komatsu’s equipment expertise, with the goal of adding hybrid technology to their decarbonization roadmaps.
Hybrid systems capture braking energy to reduce fuel use and improve productivity with faster cycle times. Pilot retrofit kits are expected to be deployed this year following Cummins’ acquisition of assets from First Mode, a clean energy innovator.
Both companies have pledged to cut emissions, with Komatsu targeting carbon neutrality across its products and operations by 2050, the release states.
