Volvo Construction Equipment has begun delivering its first U.S.-built excavators and larger wheel loaders from its Shippensburg, Pa., plant following a $40 million production expansion.
The investment added 11 models to the plant’s lineup and will increase the share of Volvo CE’s North American machine supply made in Shippensburg to more than 50%, according to the manufacturer’s release today. Volvo CE said localized production will shorten customer lead times by more than six weeks.
The Pennsylvania facility now produces 30 excavator, wheel loader and compactor models. Volvo CE reconfigured its 436,000-square-foot assembly and fabrication footprint into three flexible production lines and added excavator welding capacity without expanding the plant or workforce.
Since acquiring the operation from Ingersoll Rand in 2007, the manufacturer has invested more than $1.4 billion there and tripled annual output capacity, according to the release. Volvo CE employs more than 750 people at the site.
The manufacturer plans to increase business with Pennsylvania-based suppliers by 30% by 2030, according to the release.
