Customers Bank is expanding its use of artificial intelligence through a multiyear collaboration with OpenAI, while continuing to grow its equipment finance portfolio.

The $26 billion-asset bank plans to deploy AI across lending, payments and deposit operations, aiming to streamline workflows and improve efficiency, according to today’s release from Customers Bank. The initiative builds on its earlier adoption of ChatGPT Enterprise and includes developing customized tools for credit processes and documentation.

At the same time, the bank’s equipment finance business posted solid growth in 2025, with its equipment finance loans totaling $813.7 million as of Dec. 31, 2025, up 20.5% year over year, according to the company’s Feb. 27 10-K filing. Equipment finance leases reached $306.5 million, up 16.7% YoY, bringing the portfolio to about $1.12 billion and reflecting steady demand across key end markets.

Overall, the bank reported continued growth in its commercial lending business in 2025, supported by its focus on specialty verticals and technology-enabled banking, according to the release. The OpenAI partnership is expected to enhance productivity by automating administrative tasks, allowing bankers to focus more on client relationships and deal structuring, including in equipment finance.

Customers Bank is positioning AI as a core part of its operating model as it scales specialty lending segments such as equipment finance, according to the release. Customers Bank’s equipment finance group serves industries including transportation, construction, marine, franchise, manufacturing, aviation, solar, packaging, plastics and food processing.
