Caterpillar announced a $725 million expansion of its large engine facility in Lafayette, Ind., one of the company’s biggest manufacturing investments.
With the expansion, Caterpillar aims to meet growing global construction and energy demand driven by artificial intelligence, data centers and other critical infrastructure, according to a release from Caterpillar today.
The company also designated Indiana as one of the first states to benefit from its five-year, $100 million workforce development pledge. As part of that pledge, the company is committing up to $5 million to training and upskilling initiatives, according to the release. The program seeks to prepare U.S. workers for careers in advanced manufacturing and strengthen the nation’s industrial base.
Caterpillar employs more than 51,000 people in the United States, including over 4,100 across 12 facilities in Indiana, according to the release. The company operates 65 primary locations nationwide and has increased U.S. exports by 75% since 2016.
Founded more than a century ago, Caterpillar is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, off-highway engines, industrial turbines and diesel-electric locomotives, according to the release. Caterpillar had sales and revenues of $64.8 billion in 2024.
